The Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition 2010 |
 | In January of this year, the Worshipful Company of Musicians announced that the annual jazz composition prize could now offer prizes of £1000 in each competition category, thanks to the generosity of the Wavendon Foundation, Sir John Dankworth and Dame Cleo Laine.   Further, they reported that Sir John had kindly agreed to lend their name to the prize, conferring, as a result, significant prestige to the winners, their educational institution and their tutors.   The competition is now officially known as The Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition.
The Dankworth Prize is offered in 2 categories by The Worshipful Company of Musicians in association with Jazzorg (the organisers) for an original jazz composition in an original arrangement by the composer.
The value of the prize for each category is:
For a composition and arrangement for:
- Big band (notation for 16 players) - £1000
- Small band (notation for 7-9 players) - £1000
The competition is open to all individuals who are resident in the U.K. and are below the age of 28 years on the date of their submission.   The closing date for submissions is 4th December 2009
The competition is governed by specific rules, copies of which, together with entry forms, may be accessed at the links, below.   Entry forms must be downloaded from the link.
A submission is required to be fully notated for the intended number of players, represented by a control/conductor score, preferably in publishable form using Sibelius or Finale software.   An audio rendition of the piece (as a file, CD, audio cassette or midi) is also required.   The duration of the piece should be 6-10 minutes.
Winning entries will be published on the jazzorg website, for free download by non-commercial users.   In addition to the attendant publicity, the prizes are arranged to be presented at a special concert at Ronnie Scott's club where the winning entries will also be played by the Trinity College Jazz Ensemble.   The copyright and all rights of commercial exploitation would remain with the composer.
The competition is limited to entrants up to the age of 28 years and, whilst it will be of interest to those in mainstream music education or post-graduation it is also aimed at young musicians already pursuing their career or training elsewhere. |

Entries will be judged by Mr. Frank Griffith, Ms. Nikki Iles and Mr. Tim Garland. |
