Evolvent (Audio)
yuriy2_68 Yuriy Galkin’ began his jazz career in Moscow and moved to the England to study at the Royal Academy.   'Evolvent' is his prize-winning entry in the small band category of the Worshipful Company of Musicians and Jazzorg 2010 Competition and this recording features Yuriy’s own band, Symbiosis.   The piece was also premiered at Ronnie Scott's club in March 2010.   Click on the heading to get to a sample or go straight to the download for the full audio version at [this link]   This piece is a ‘how-to’ to accompany the manuscript download but it is also fine small band jazz in its own right played by some of the UK’s most talented young musicians.

'Kites' - Sax Appeal
Some jazz never 'fades' for you and every now and again you find that you go back to the that favourite CD and stick it in the car player, once again.   In that category is the great Sax Appeal album 'Flatout' (Jazzizit CD9503), made with a star line-up from Nigel Hitchcock (alto/tnr/sop), Dave O'Higgins (tnr), Mornington Lockett( tnr), Scott Garland (tnr), Gary Plumley (alt/tnr), Bob McKay (bari/flt), Simon Hale (pno), Phil Mulford (bass), Mike Bradley (drs) and, of course, the gaffer, Derek Nash (alto/sop).   Typical of the album's quality is this superb track 'Kites', a 3/4 composition by Derek, evoking maybe the kite's flight and gilded with delightful solos from Nigel on soprano and Bob on flute.   You can download the full track at [this link] , hear a sample by clicking the heading and you can access the CD source by clicking on the image.   A great album for your collection.

'New York Walk' (Audio)
'New York Walk' is a swinging track form the Sax Appeal CD 'The Flatiron Suite (JITCD 00541).   This justifiably famous saxophone quintet features Matt Wates (alto), Scott Garland (alto), Gary Plumley (tnr), Paul Booth (tnr), and, of course, Derek Nash (bari).   For this session, the stonking rhythm section was made up of Pete Adams (pno), Phil Scragg (bass) and Mark Fletcher (drs).   There are superb solos from Matt and Derek and a glorious sax soli for your enjoyment.   You can access the Sax Appeal website by clicking on the image and hear a sample of the track by clicking on the heading.   Alternatively, you can go straight to the full track download for listening or as a guide to Derek's arrangement (available on the 'sheet music' tab) by clicking on the 'downloads' tab or go direct at [this link]   This is a great track but don't just believe us - among the less hyperbolic comments about this group were the following:

'....probably one of the finest saxophone bands in the world.' (Digby Fairweather, Radio 2)

'....Princes of the Horn in thunderous form...the bravado of this band is breathtaking...' (The Sunday Times)

'When I hear Derek Nash doing the brilliant solo at the end with the riffs supporting him I start to move involuntarily.   I hope you will too.' (Jools Holland)

'A bravura display of contemporary saxophone styles by a group of leading British players.   This is the band that aspiring saxophonists go along to hear, although the experience is often a chastening one.   As well as presenting some stupendously accomplished playing the 10 pieces are distinguished by the witty and inventive arrangements of leader Derek Nash.' (The Observer)

'Milesteps' - Frank Griffith Nonet
The Frank Griffith Nonet, on this up-tempo tribute to Miles, display breathtaking technique on the ensemble passages and fire and brimstone on the solos.   This is really a track for your iPod or, if you haven't yet caught up, your Walkman.   Superb solos from the maestro himself and the Fishwick brothers, Steve and Matt, on trumpet and drums respectively, make this such a memorable track that you'll want to get the whole album (The Coventry Suite - 33JAZZ112)   You can hear a sample by clicking the heading and you can access the CD source by clicking on the image.   You can get to the track download on the downloads tab or go direct at [this link]

'...this latest assembly of Frank Griffith's work has delighted me....' (Sir John Dankworth)

'The Sidewinder' - Cubana Bop
Cubana Bop's third CD, entitled 'Now Hear This' is out now and follows the critically-acclaimed album, 'The Story So Far'.   'The Sidewinder' is an up-tempo track from the earlier recording with some terrific ensemble and exciting solos.   Click on the image to get to the Cubana Bop website, click on the heading to hear a sample or click on [this link] , to get to the full track download.     Plaudits from the critics for 'The Story So Far' include:

“Gleaming with freshness, the ensemble playing is flawless; the rhythms pulsate with power and the solos are strong.”     (Jack Massarik, Evening Standard)

“With this impressive second CD, pianist Terry Seabrook’s Cubana Bop emerges as one of Europe’s top Latin bands. The brass is simply phenomenal.”     (Dave Gelly, The Observer)

“A beautiful album and very highly recommended”     (Jimmy Le Messurier, The Musician)
